In the event of an accident or breakdown, the safety vest is used to improve the driver's visibility to traffic and the warning triangle is used to cordon off the accident site and make it immediately visible. Owing to the introduction of the high-visibility vest requirement in 2014, all cars, trucks, buses and tractors with a German licence must be carrying a high-visibility vest. A high-visibility vest is not always a "must". It is, however, recommended on walks or for children who are still out at dusk because of its reflectors.
